Vehicle goes over bay bridge crossing and crashes into Pearson’s Port area

Newport Beach Police issued a Nixle alert at 5:54 p.m. last evening, Sept. 6, announcing a road closure in both directions of Pacific Coast Highway between Dover Drive and Bayside Drive due to a major traffic accident.

Preliminary reports from NBPD spokesperson Heather Rangel indicate that a vehicle traveling on PCH “in an unknown direction” went over the side railing of the bay bridge located there and landed in the Pearson’s Port area below.

The police are reporting that a “single occupant was being extracted from the vehicle and airlifted to a nearby hospital.”

Eastbound lanes on PCH opened for traffic an hour after the initial alert, but the westbound lanes were expected to be closed another 3-4 hours.

There was no immediate report of injury or death.
