Suspect arrested after allegedly stealing and ditching vehicle in Dover Shores area, hiding out and barricading himself in another resident’s vehicle

Yesterday morning, Thursday, Jan. 19, at approximately 7:02 a.m., a resident reported to the Newport Beach Police Department that their vehicle was missing from the area of Bedford Lane and Buckingham Lane in Westcliff. The vehicle’s GPS, however, showed it was still located nearby in Dover Shores.

Officers immediately responded to the location and found the car parked and unoccupied on the street near Dover Drive and Mariners Avenue. As officers conducted their investigation, a nearby resident entered their vehicle parked in their driveway and discovered a male inside the back seat area.

The suspect then barricaded himself in the back of the vehicle. After 45 minutes, the suspect exited the vehicle and was arrested without incident.

Nicholas Aker, a 26-year-old male and Newport Beach resident, was arrested and taken into custody and charged with taking an auto without the owner’s consent, tampering with a vehicle and subsequently for possessing a controlled substance in jail.

A Nixle alert was generated by the NBPD at 8:18 a.m. alerting the residents in the area to a developing situation, encouraging them to please remain indoors and/or to avoid the area completely.

No injuries or other concerns were reported.

Editor’s Note: An arrest contains allegations that a suspect has committed a crime. Every defendant is presumed to be innocent until and unless proven guilty in court.
